December 2018 at Kendal,  B walk led by Frank Baldwin

The ‘B’ and ‘C’ walkers here in Kendal on a superb day in December, so lucky with the weather and wonderful views, I think I know what the grass mounds are that we saw a lot of – they are the mounds made by the yellow  ant…

The Yellow Meadow Ant is familiar to us as the common ant that creates anthills in grassland and downland habitats, but also appears in our gardens if the grass is not cut too often. They build a soil dome above the nest (which can extend a metre below the ground) to help regulate temperature and humidity.
